Parent Support Group

What is the Parent Support Group (PSG)?

The PSG gives families an opportunity to participate in their child’s school community through volunteer work. At Heartwood we organize our volunteer opportunities through various committees, detailed below.

During PSG meetings we discuss current issues, brainstorm ideas for future events, and evaluate new committee ideas. We would love to see every parent participate in these discussions. We want your input!

When does the PSG meet?

Our first meeting of the school year takes place in mid-September. During this initial meeting we discuss the previous year’s committees and gauge interest for this year’s activities and school needs. This meeting is held twice — once at 9:00am and once at 6:30pm — with the same content, to give all our families a chance to participate.

Please email with any questions that you may have.

Volunteer Opportunities

Snack Shopping

Coordinator: Mary McKinney   Sign up in Front Office

If you have availability on a Monday during the school year, please consider signing up to shop! We provide the list and everything you need; you help us provide our students with healthy, wholesome snacks. Check the list on the office door to claim as many or as few days as you want, then when you’re ready to shop, simply stop by the school, pick up the BJ’s card and credit card, and we’ll help you unload when you get back.

Grounds Committee

Chaired by: TBD Volunteer

The Grounds Committee provides opportunities for parents to work on landscaping and improvement around the school. Every Spring, we host a Day of Service when family members of all ages can come together to tackle projects big and small.

The Grounds Committee welcomes volunteers throughout the school year. Whether you want to plant a few flowers, touch up some paint, enhance a classroom, or tackle a bigger project, we would love your help and your ideas!

Parent Education Program (PEP) Steering Committee

Chaired by: TBD Volunteer

The Parent Education Program Steering Committee determines speakers and topics of interest for our community enrichment series. For more information on PEP and examples of past programs, click here.

 Fundraising Committee

Chaired by: Hollis Vaughen Volunteer

While classes can organize specific fundraising activities, the Committee plans and coordinates school-wide drives and experiential fundraisers. We also receive support from:

Box Tops For Education

Box tops can be dropped off in the lobby, either bagged or on collection sheets until October 15, 2019.  This will be our last collection since BTFE is changing their program. Current organizer: Sarah Ribault

 Scholastic Books

Scholastic gives our school store credit for each purchase made by our parents, which we pass along to our teachers so that they may update their classroom libraries. You can order books online at any time. Current organizer: Audrey Dixon

– Go to

– Enter our one-time Class Activation Code, H2YPM.

– Shop and submit your child’s book order. All classes use teacher name Mary McKinney.

– Your books will be delivered directly to the school.

Spirit Gear

Our Spirit Gear drive occurs during each of the Fall and Spring semesters. In the past, we have offered t-shirts, hoodies, and long-sleeve shirts for all ages, plus car magnets and hats. Our best sellers are the 100% cotton white t-shirts, perfect for the tie-dye project each class does at the end of the year. Current organizer: Allicia Meuse

Social Committee

Chaired by: TBD Volunteer

The Heartwood  experience doesn’t have to end with afternoon pick-up! Building relationships with other parents is a great way to strengthen our school’s community and ultimately enhance our children’s educational experience.

The Social Committee has organized family game nights and Saturday morning playdates as well as large-scale events that include the greater community. If you’re interested in helping to plan an event or have an idea for the committee, we’d love to hear from you.

Community Outings

The Outings subcommittee helps Heartwood families get together outside of the school environment. In the past we’ve had coffee meet ups for parents, group lunches with the whole family, pumpkin painting and scavenger hunts. This committee also works with the Fundraising committee to organize experiences like a Jellybeans skating trip.

Event Planning

The Event Planning subcommittee gathers as needed to coordinate promotion, ticket sales and logistics for community-scale events. These do not happen every year, but have included our 25th Anniversary Silent Auction Gala, which built the Darden House, and the 2019 Red Molly concert, which brought music and research curriculum enhancements to our classrooms.

Yearbook Committee

Chaired by: Ginny McCollum Volunteer

The Heartwood yearbook is a beloved tradition, including hundreds of photos from classroom life and annual events as well as interviews for each student. The Yearbook Committee welcomes volunteers for candid photography year-round. Beginning in February, we need volunteers to interview the younger children, type, edit and proofread. Opportunities for layout and design are also available.

Heartwood will not reopen for the 2021-2022 school year.

We regret to inform you that Heartwood will not reopen for the 2021-2022 school year.
