What is the Parent Support Group (PSG)?
The PSG gives families an opportunity to participate in their child’s school community through volunteer work. At Heartwood we organize our volunteer opportunities through various committees such as the Buildings and Grounds Committee or the Social Committee. Other committees are formed to tackle events like our annual Spring Fling.
During PSG meetings we discuss current issues and throw out ideas for future events and even new committee ideas. We would love to see every parent participate in these discussions. We want your input!
When does the PSG meet?
Our second meeting will be held on Tuesday, January 24th. Join us in the morning at 9:00 am or later in the evening at 6:30 pm.
Our first meeting of the 2016/2017 school year was held on Tuesday, Sept. 13th. During the meeting we discussed last year’s committees and gauged interest for this year’s activities and school needs. We would love your continued input and suggestions. Please email email@example.com with any questions or ideas that you may have.
Missed the first meeting but interested in what was discussed? You can find minutes from the meeting here.
Check back here for updates on upcoming events organized by PSG committees.

PSG Committees for the 2016/2017 School Year
Yearbook: Ginny McCollum
For the past 3 years, Ginny McCollum has worked with our community of parents, teachers and students to create one of a kind yearbooks. Each yearbook includes photos from our annual events as well as interviews or bio’s for each student. These yearbooks are wonderful keepsakes that bring a lot of smiles to Heartwood families.
The Yearbook Committee needs volunteers beginning in January. Parents are needed to help interview our younger students as well as edit their responses so that they will fit in the yearbook.
Grounds Committee: Aliya Gard
Aliya Gard is returning for her second year as the chair of our Grounds Committee. The goal of the Grounds Committee is to provide opportunities for parents to work on improvement projects around the school both as a group and individually. In the past we have spruced up our gardens, painted the classrooms and have brought new life to our playgrounds.
The Grounds Committee is in need of volunteers throughout the school year. Whether you want plant a flower, touch up some paint or tackle a bigger project, we would love your help and your ideas!
Social Committee: Heidi Craig and Marilyn Lewis
The goal of our Social Committee is to give Heartwood Families an opportunity to spend time together outside of the school environment. Building relationships with other Heartwood parents is a great way to strengthen the Heartwood community and ultimately enhance our children’s educational experience.
In the past we have had coffee meet ups for parents, group lunches with the whole family as well as pumpkin painting and scavenger hunts. If you are interested in helping to plan an event or have an idea for the committee, please let us know. We would love to hear from you!
Cathy Brooks will be organizing our order this year. Small Hands catalogs will be sent home in October and orders will arrive in December before the holiday break. The items in the small hands catalogs are Montessori inspired and can be used at home to encourage independence and confidence. Every order placed goes towards building up store credit for the school. At the end of the fundraiser, the store credit we have earned will be divided among the classes. Teachers are then able to order new materials and books for their classrooms.
This year Spirit Wear orders will go out in the fall and the spring. In the fall we will offer t- shirts and zip up hoodies in several different colors with the school’s logo on both. In the spring we will offer Heartwood baseball hats and white t-shirts. The white shirts look great tie-dyed and can be used in place of a plain white shirt during the end of the year tie-dying activity.
Heidi Craig organizes our Scholastic Books order which usually goes home in the early and late fall as well as in the spring. This is a great opportunity to both support the classroom teachers and purchase some great quality books at an amazing value. Scholastic gives our school store credit for each purchase made by our parents that we pass along to our teachers so that they may update their classroom libraries. You can order books online at anytime.
– Go to scholastic.com/readingclub
– Enter our one-time Class Activation Code, H2YPM.
– Shop and submit your child’s book order.
– Your books will be delivered directly to the school.
Original Works catalogs will come home in October. They will be sent home in a green plastic envelope along with the art work that your child has made. The art work in that envelope is what will be printed on any of the items you order. Renee Corcoran organizes this fundraiser every year with our art teacher Ms.Courtney and they do a fabulous job. The Original Works order usually raises around a thousand dollars for the school. This year that money will be used to support the building of the new shelter thatis being constructed behind the school.
