PSG in 2007/2008

This year we will be working on several major events/projects.

  • The Building and Grounds subcommittee will be working on the Outdoor Environment project all year. This will involve volunteer help with the many physical changes that are going to take place at the school. Please see below for their plans.
  • The Spring Fling Subcommittee will be working hard all year to bring this event to fruition on May 3rd at Lake Wheeler Park. The subcommittee has several areas that will involve volunteers: Silent Auction; Food; Teacher outings; Event Games; Raffle; Class Baskets   and overall management.
  • The Yearbook Subcommittee will meet all year to prepare the 2007/2008 Heartwood Yearbook for publication, to be delivered in mid May.

Each of these subcommittees will have periodic updates, check back often for information and ways to help.

For more information, please go to the subcommittee page:

How Can You Help?

Fundraising Committee : It's primary focus all year is planning the Spring Fling, scheduled for May 3rd. There are 5 subcommittee that work on this event. Feel free to email the parent in charge and see how you can help. You can always contact Darlene H. Chair of the Fundraising Committee with questions.

  1. Food (getting donated food items for the event, organizing the menu, helping to serve the food at the event): You can contact Julie W.

  2. Silent Auction (obtaining auction items from parents and local businesses to raise funds for the PSG): Contact Denise K.

  3. Games/Entertainment (parents and teachers organize games for the children throughout the event): Contact Linda B.

  4. Teacher Outings (teachers donate an "outing" they will do with a small number of children. The kids submit raffle tickets to win. Kids love this!): Contact Trude B.

  5. Class Baskets (each class has a themed basket of goodies that is auctioned off at the event. Gathering the items, putting the baskets together.) Contact Alison M.

Building and Grounds Commitee: This committee will be working on the outdoor environment all year long. They also provide assistance with improvements and repairs. Contact Kathleen E. or Sue Daniel for information on how you can help out.

Social/Hospitality Committee:

We would like to have a Wine & Cheese social for Heartwood parents.  If anyone has access to a club house or community room that would be suitable, please let us know.  We've had these in the past and they are fun.

Looking for a few good restaurants!  The Social & Hospitality Committee would like to set up some dates throughout the year for Heartwood families to eat out and make a little money on the side.  Some restaurants do fund raisers, giving back 5 - 10% of the evening's proceeds.  If you have a favorite restaurant that you think would be a great place for families to have dinner and rub elbows, ask them if they are interested in arranging a fundraiser with Heartwood.  If they are, let Mary (in the office) know and we'll set it up.  Thanks.

Please contact Mary McKinney for more information.

Yearbook Committee: This Committee will be working on taking digital pictures of the children at work and play at Heartwood. In the winter, editing using Photoshop Elements 5 will begin.

We need parents who are interested in taking pictures, editing to help out. Contact Vickie Leff if you'd like to work on this.

What is the PSG?

The PSG is a group of committees made up of parents who volunteer to help organize social and fundraising activities for the Heartwood community. We organize family picnics, Field Days, Book Fairs and other great events bringing the Heartwood families together. There are numerous ways that you can participate in your child's school community.

The standing committees of the PSG are:

  • Fundraising
  • Social Committee
  • Building and Grounds
  • Yearbook
  • Room Reps

The Parent Group meets 4-6 times a year to discuss new and existing activities. ALL Heartwood parents are invited and encouraged to attend these meetings. You do NOT have to volunteer for anything, but we encourage your input on the events of the PSG. For those who choose to commit to certain projects, they attend each meeting to get input and assistance and report on the progress of the event.

The PSG is run like many other committees- parents volunteer to head up an activity or event and then enlist other parents to become involved on that Subcommittee, which may meet separately from the PSG.

Heartwood 2007-08 PSG has formed the following committees this year:

  • Social and Hospitality Committee provides support for families in times of crisis, organizes charity work including student involvement, plans social events such as picnics and restaurant nights, among other volunteer services.
  • Building and Grounds provides repair and maintenance services, and is organizing a "master plan" for the school's outdoor environment.
  • Room Reps is made up of the volunteer parent room representatives for each class. They are responsible for many of the classroom based activities throughout the year.
  • Fundraising is done by interested committee chairs who want to follow through with a particular interest or plan to raise money for the school to use for classroom equipment, playground improvements, enrichment, and teacher development programs.
  • Yearbook Committee helps to provide the photographs and other materials for the Heartwood Yearbook that is available at the end of the year.

The primary fundraising activity this year will be the Spring Fling, to be held on May 3rd. Last year  over $9,000 was raised through a silent auction, selling tickets for food and games to the event and more.  Planning for the Spring Fling begins in September and is active throughout the year.

If you are interested in volunteering for any of these committees, please contact Vickie Leff at Heartwood vickie@heartwoodmontessori.com.
