Why Choose Heartwood

Respect for the child is the cornerstone of Heartwood’s philosophy.

“Children are human beings to whom respect is due, superior to us by reason of their innocence and of the greater possibilities of their future.”

At all levels and all areas, Heartwood places the needs of the child first. That is why we are so passionate about the Montessori Method! We believe that it is the most effective way to help guide our students to social, emotional and academic success.

The Montessori Method is based on careful observation of and respect for the natural development of the child. It has been successfully used in schools around the world for over 90 years! This approach recognizes that a child is more responsive to certain learning experiences at particular times within a particular plane of development.

Careful observation allows the Montessori-trained teacher to recognize these developmental periods when a child is ready for a new learning experience. The teacher can then direct the child toward materials that will challenge the child while making sure he is successful.

The teachers at Heartwood are trained Montessorians, certified through the American Montessori Society. The ability of the staff, combined with their commitment to the educational and social welfare of our students, provides an environment that promotes a life long love of learning.

At Heartwood, the goals of our program are to:

  • Provide a developmentally-appropriate learning environment where children are free to explore and grow cognitively, physically, socially, and emotionally
  • Foster self-confidence and a good self-image
  • Develop a positive attitude toward learning
  • Enhance emotional intelligence and social awareness through Peace curriculum

We believe that, in the words of Dr. Montessori, “…education is not something which the teacher does, but …is a natural process which develops spontaneously in the human being. It is not acquired by listening to words, but by virtue of experience in which the child acts on his environment.” Learn what this philosophy looks like across grade levels by visiting the “Academics” tab at the top of this page.
